Course methodologies

EMJMD STEPS course structure compromises theoretical education, practical content, and a solid scientific instruction.

The EMJMD STEPS curriculum is structured into courses. Within each course there will be a combination of teaching methods such as lectures, tutorials, presentations, seminars and clinical practice, depending on their particular focus:

  • Lectures introduce the module subjects, and provide students with the theoretical grounds for a deeper understanding of specific engineering challenges.
  • Tutorials are intended to consolidate the subject matter. In tutorials, students discuss their solutions to exercises in supervised groups.
  • Presentations serve for practical applications and deepening of the taught material as well as for the acquisition of practical skills in potential application areas. Student presentations are intended to train the competence to speak and communicate, but also to analyze technical or scientific problems, relate them to the state-of-the-art in the corresponding subfield, solve them, present the problems, the state-of-the-art and the obtained solution, and defend their findings.
  • Seminars are intended to acquire a specialized knowledge and familiarise with specific technologies and practices.
  • Laboratories are one of the key features of the EMJMD STEPS. In specific modules (Nottingham 2nd term and Oviedo 3rd term), students will be fully involved in practical laboratories where they will cover the practical aspects of previous subjects. The idea of bringing the practical contents to one common subject allows the students to fully incorporate the previous theoretical subjects to the development of a small project and to understand that integration of interdisciplinary knowledge is the key idea of the EMJMD STEPS.

Course workload, according to the Bologna methodology, also includes self-study time for students to go through and review the course topics according to their own plans.

The specific content of the course modules will be determined by the EMJMD STEPS Academic Commission and will be updated for each edition of the Course. The list of advanced modules offered will be published at the beginning of each academic year on the dedicated Course web site.

The learning outcomes of the individual courses, their prerequisites and the compulsory tracks between courses are given in the individual course descriptions.

The EMJMD STEPS official teaching language will be English, and students must be English proficient. However, given the programme mobility track, students will be using at least another 2 EU languages, Spanish and either Italian or Portuguese. The non English speaking partners will provide for Master students to attend Spanish, Portuguese and Italian language courses free of additional costs, as well as culture courses, while they are attending their Master courses. Language courses can be recognised for a maximum of 5 ECTS in the Joint Diploma Supplement.

In order to facilitate the integration of the international students in local social life, intensive course languages of minimum 2 weeks are offered at the beginning of each academic year (Sep/1st week of Oct). With the language courses being at the very beginning of the academic course, students coming from third countries outside the EU will have an opportunity to know and participate in the European culture, which will facilitate their integration. All partner Universities are operating tandem system for language learning in which the EMJMD STEPS students will be able to participate.

In order to facilitate access to students who were not able to process their applications in the first phase of the selection process for the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD), The University of Oviedo has announced a new admission period aimed at 8 self-financing students
